THE VIKING BOWS OUT IN HEROIC FIGHT
16/09/02
ANDY "The Viking" Fordham had his challenge to become the first winner of the World Darts Trophy in Holland ended by a true champion.
In the match of the tournament Andy's dream of the title was shattered by the eventually winner Tony David of Australia.
It was a sensational semi-final played in-front of a sell-out 3,000 crowd.
Andy battled back from 3 sets to one down at the break to take a 4 - 3 lead in the best of nine set match.
But David showed the skill and stamina that saw him lift the Embassy world title earlier this year to come back and take the deciding set.
It was a massive blow for Andy but he can rest secure in the knowledge that his already high reputation has been further enhanced by his performance in Utrecht.
The statistics speak volumes with Andy achieving the second highest average 32.47 - behind Ted Hankey - the man he beat in the second round.
Andy said: "I said all week that I was playing well and if I could keep it up someone would have to play very well to beat me.
"That's what happened - but I'm proud of how I played and it was a great week all round."
For the record Andy won three matches and had a three dart average of 97.41. He hit 44.7% of doubles, won 55 legs and lost 38.
And he's still a champion!!
Roll on the Embassy.
Viking Is Just Magic
13/09/02
Andy Fordham magic'd his way into the last four of the World Darts Trophy in Holland.
The Viking was unstoppable as he made Steve "Magic" Coote disappear in minutes as he won their quarter final battle five sets to one.
Andy was on fire as he scored an average of more than 32 throughout the match.
Afterwards he said: "I knew if I continued playing the way I have been all week I would be difficult to beat and that's what happened.
"I'm delighted to be in the last four of this magnificent tournament and am going all out to continue my form.
"All credit to Steve who made me really battle, but it's great for all the Viking's Dutch fans here to be able to see me at my best."
Viking Wipes Floor With Hankey
12/09/02
After the Viking went on the Rassel in the first round of the World Darts Trophy in Holland it was Hankey's out in the second.
Andy was in epic form as he marched on at an emotionally charged day at the inaugural World Dart Trophy in Utrecht in Holland.
After a minute's silence to commemorate the victims of the World Trade Centre atrocity was immaculately observed by the 1,000 strong crowd and all the stars of the darts world, Andy stepped up to the oche to face the man in form - Ted Hankey.
Hankey - The Count - had dispatched Wayne Mardle in the classic battle of the first round 3-2.
The Count had staked an early claim to be the high flyer at the WDT.
But the Viking had other ideas.
Andy had been on good form when he beat Jan va der Rassel in round one 3-1 but he knew The Count would not lie down easily.
As the sun set in the magnificent Utrecht stadium where the WDT is being played The Count came out to play.
But the Viking was waiting.
Andy had never beaten Ted in a major competition - and has lost to him at the Embassy - so he was hoping a new tournament would signal a fresh start against the batman.
He was right.
Andy never let Ted settle and was quickly into his stride with a succession of high-scoring sets.
He even had the crowd on their feet after he just failed to hit treble 15 after two 180s and a treble 20 had put him just two darts away from a nine-dart finish and a £35,000 car!!
The first set plundered, Andy set about storming to victory in the second. Hankey hardly had chance to draw breath as Andy continued his solid start.
At 2-0 down The Count fought back and won the third set.
But The Viking was not to be denied and crowned a magnificent performance by taking the third set.
After his victory Andy said: "I thought Ted was favourite going into the match but I started well and managed to keep it going.
"It was nice to beat him as I have never done it before in a major tournament.
"If I can keep playing like this and averaging 32 then I will be happy."
Andy faces Steve Coote in the quarter final and is expecting a tough match after Coote defeated one of the favourites Martin Adams in round two.

The Viking on the Rassel
The Viking has been drawn against a Dutch unknown in the first round of the new World Darts Trophy in Holland.
Andy will play Jan van der Rassel on the night of Sunday September 8th in a bid to reach the second round of the prestigious new tournament.
Andy said he was pleased to have been drawn against one of the home wild card entries in the first round and expected a tough match against a man he knows very little about.
He said: "I don't know much at all about Jan van der Rassel but if he is playing in this tournament he is sure to be a class darts player.
But I'm heading to Holland full of confidence and will enjoy standing up there and throwing against one of the local stars.
My game is going well at the moment and if I can be consistent then I'll be difficult to beat."
Andy said he is looking forward to being part of the first World Dart Trophy - especially as he has so many Dutch fans.
He said: "I love playing darts in Holland and can't wait for the World Darts trophy to get under way. It is sure to be a great success and can only be good for darts and the growth of the sport in Europe. It also gives me another chance to say hello to all the friends I have made playing abroad over the past few years."
The World Darts Trophy will be played at the Vechtesbahen Complex in Utrecht from Saturday September 7 until Sunday September 15 and will be televised by Dutch TV company SBS-6.
Top darts players representing nine countries are taking part including Embassy World Professional Men's Champion Tony David from Australia.
The impressive line-up included "flying Dutchman" Raymond van Barneveld, Ted Hankey and John "Boy" Walton.
Viking conquers Wales
The Viking put his opponents well and truly to the sword when he stormed to the Welshtitle.
Not only did he win the prestigious title he secured eight vital points towards another appearance in the Embassy World Championships next year.
Andy gained revenge for his shock exit at this year's Embassy at the hands of John "Boy" Walton when he was drawn against Walton in the last 32 stage in Wales - the Viking winning 3-2 this time.
Andy went on from strength to strength and underlined his superior form with a 3-0 victory over Richard Foster in the last 16.
He then proved just how hot he was by whitewashing England's Ronnie Baxter.
Netherland's player Jean Paul van Acker made his way to the semis by beating Les Fitton 3-2 but he could not get past a determined Viking who went on to win the tournament with victory over England's Ian Jones in the final.
